Misbehaving Mossberg Patriot Rebuild Part 2: Complete Rebuild for Jim Harmer (Backfire TV)
Full Story: ultimatereloader.com/fjb1
UR on RUMBLE: rumble.com/ultimatereloader
UR on Patreon: www.patreon.com/ultimatereloader
I recently took apart Jim Harmer’s troublesome Mossberg Patriot just to take a look. Jim and I agreed, it was the worst-performing bolt-action rifle we'd ever fired. I had some decisions to make. Was it possible to salvage any part of this rifle? After diagnosing the issues I realized a complete rebuild was necessary. In this video I get to work and completely transform it. Has it been redeemed? Check it out!

I don't think I can add anything to the other comments about how ridiculous it is to call this a "rebuild". It's like a car guy saying the first tool he used on the restoration of his new project car was a car crusher. This video feels more like a "Hey, look at me!" video. But hey, over 2,300 views in an hour. THAT is the real goal here anyway, isn't it? The only purpose the Mossberg served was to pull in views from people who follow Backfire and know how frustrated he has been with the Patriot. You played your audience, and they know it. I really agree with the comments that talk about how much $$$$ went into that rebuild. And then you came back at the end and wanted comments from other Mossberg owners. WHY? You don't have a Mossberg anymore. (Well, actually, you do. It's in pieces in a box someplace, missing an action.) Five Pinocchios on this one.
This video might have looked like a good idea on paper, but it holds zero value for 99.9% of its viewers.
Like everyone else commenting, WTF? How is this "fixing" anything?
I thought I was missing something....but even the caliber changed. I also dont think anything was fixed on the original Patriot except maybe the extractor....😢😢 Sorry, not what I expected.
Disappointed, like everyone else
Should have bought a Savage. Problem solved. And 6 brasher....wth
Huge miss on this video. Should have put some time and effort into the original barrel and action.
Ah, so easy fix. Get about $1,500 worth of components and machine time, and keep only the action to fix the accuracy on a $450 rifle. Makes sense to me. Cool rifle, but we really didn't look at other options that could have corrected issues for way less of an investment.
A shame mossberg is putting that poor of quality out.
shocking revelation that if you replace everything aside from the action it will shoot. crazy....
I'd whould have stuck to 308 But id go throug the diagnostics process rather than just "its not working, lets replace 90% of it"
I would have liked to see the rifle keeping its wooden stock and caliber just to see gunsmith problem solving to keep it the looks the same.
I respect your skills and equipment, but this is a senseless project! it won't help a person that owns a piece of crap mossberg rifle shoot one bit better with out spending $2000. or more!
Gavin did just what most of us thought he would do. Instead of trouble shooting why it shoots the way it does, he just built a new rifle. Anyone who bought this rifle bought it because of the price. Throwing a couple thousand at it isn't what most could afford. Those that could would have just bought a more than expensive rifle. This is the first time I have given Gavin a dislike.
I have a Remington 700 in 300 win mag was pretty much doing the same thing as the “donor rifle”. I had that gun to 2 different gunsmiths , switched the scopes, bases , rings and stock and it didn’t help at all. I almost was ready to throw the towel in until I saw cortonas needmor series. At least he broke it down to see what the problem was and eventually he just put tuner breaks and resolved a lot of the issues he was having. I eventually I put a tuner break on mine and I went from crazy groups like this rifle down to under an inch ( good enough for a hunting rifle) I have watched Jim struggle with this gun for years and I’ve seen the cortonas videos. I’m like everybody else this was tone death. The reason people buy budget rifles is that’s what they can afford. I was hoping to see more of the gun used or atleast threading it for the tuner break. I know you guys work together but I never seen anybody that has a rifle that shoots awful go ok let’s try this and fix it.
I feel like this is a missed opportunity to try various things to get it to shoot better. To actually help someone in a position where they have a rifle that can't shoot and the replacement from the manufacturer also doesn't shoot.
Please listen to your viewers
Very disappointing. You completely abandoned any application of troubleshooting skills and simply replaced everything but the action. Your viewers--and you and Jim--have no better idea why the pre-modification rifle was shooting so poorly. Yes, you had a theory, but you did nothing to validate it. Please do better--we know you can!
I fixed my old truck the same way. I went out and bought a new one. It is so much better after the repair
Your missing the point UR . Everyone asked you to find the problem , not to build a new gun😢
I think you missed the mark on this. As others have said this isn't what we were expecting. The gun isn't even in the same class of rifle anymore. I would I have liked to see more in depth problem solving done. Then if parts like the barrel needed to be replaced at least keep it in the same caliber and configuration as it started out as. Don't just stick it in a chassis and put a 26 inch competition barrel on it.
I guess he's big enough now that he doesn't even read the comments or just doesn't care
Is this just an Infomercial
Your building skills are fantastic, however your diagnosing skills must suck. This was supposed to be a “how to figure out the rifle issue” vid. Instead you showed off and built a new one……LAME!
Dude???? Not a repair. Big difference between Gunsmith and rifle builder. Lets see you fix the damn thing
i hoped you would first change the stock, shoot it again to see how much a better stock improves precision. then borescoping the barrel and so on. just diagnosing a reason this things shoots bad would be nice. while complete rifle overhaul is nice but at this point you are better of just ditching the complete rifle and go with custome action. probably cheaper as well!
I would have been impressed if you would have stayed with a 308 instead of a 6 mm dasher
So: which is the best brass to reload (GOAT)?
Would have appreciated diagnosis of the original problem, much like Eric Cortina’s 6.5 “needs more” series, then have at it with the custom shenanigans.
Obviously you don't care about what the viewers would like to see. Completely ridiculous build 🙄.
Wait until he sends you the bill. 😂
I put my 6.5cm in a MDT LSS. really like it.
This video was so tone deaf to what the audience actually wanted to see. Like, yeah throwing a whole bunch of money at any problem can fix it, but what about the underlying issue. What if you had 1/10th of the budget but the same issue - where do you throw your pennies on the dollar to get the best outcome. Extremely disappointed by the video, all the potential with a lack luster execution
That’s a nice custom rifle it’s totally different can’t call it a mossberg patriot anymore
Rebuild? More like replacing with a custom rifle 😂
ua-cam.com/video/LAh8HryVaeY/v-deo.htmlsi=_mZT4jC1R__9XoQT
Woo Hoo. You took a cheap doner action and built a new rifle out of top shelf parts and yet you seem astounded by the fact that the new custom rifle can shoot half inch groups with the most expensive factory ammo one can get. What a winner. You are a rifle builder, and there is no shame in that, but don't call yourself a gunsmith based on what you did here.
I am with everyone else. It would have been informative to troubleshoot and fix the issue without just building a new rifle in a different caliber. With the plastic insert it was riding on, a chassis may have fixed it.
I would much rather see you work with the original rifle parts, figure out what is really the problem and make this rifle shoot. Anybody can replace all of the parts and do a complete rebuild.
Sad to see the "solution" was to make another custom build rather than solving the problem. But sponsorships pays the bills I guess.. The real problem was the plastic bedding. Lame
Good vid, I am guessing that the lesson is dont buy the patriot. If you do, rebuild the whole thing.
This helped no one looking to fix Mossberg accuracy issues. Just showing off gunsmith skills. Waste
I'm really disappointed like everyone else.. you had a golden opportunity to do a 3 or 4 part series and a really good advertising piece for your business, showing us your diagnostic capabilities as a gunsmith and not just parts thrower... ya, the bedding setup was poor, but could it be fixed? Just how bad was the barrel?
Bummer. Could have been a good series but we didn’t learn anything about the cause of the accuracy issue.
Put the factory barrel back on and see what it does
this
Ron White was right all along.
Excelente ❤😮
Well you really screwed up with this one. Not a single one of us wanted to see you build a new gun from scratch. You did not touch a single part of the old rifle to see what was making it missbehave. Very dissapointed
2750fps with 105s🥱👎 1/2" group 👎 I assume firing pin drop and protrusion were not checked. Sloppy gunsmithing.👎 Putting $2000 into a $400 Mossberg.👎 Overall rating 👎👎👎👎
Im going out on a limb here and saying that 95% of people watching this channel or backfire are looking for true reviews on cheaper rifles that we could may start out buying as starting point having good bones to it ( or even a really nice rifle where we dont have to work on it and just shoot it out of box) , or options and ways to improve our groups and functions of our rifles. Then later now adding a trigger , maybe chassis. We sure aint buying a new rifle for the action we wouldn't have money to do all this then if we have any money left it maybe a rattle can spray paint job. This video was made more for promotion of what u can do on a business level. WE THE PEOPLE, will never have this option or money to send a rifle in to do this
