Mystery Solved: Should You Hunt Bear With Copper? (Guy's Back Country Bear Hunt)
Full Story: ultimatereloader.com/e1sn

I was both surprised and pleased to get a call from Gary Cameron, owner of Cameron Outfitters. I’d hunted bear with him last year, but hadn’t gotten a shot at one. He called in late May, saying that he had an opening at his backcountry bear camp and asked if I wanted to go hunting. Well of course! The only rub was that I had to get packed and to his base camp in a remote section of Idaho in just a few days. Fortunately, I hike on a regular basis so I was in decent physical condition, but what rifle, scope, and ammo did I have ready to use? On top of that, I wanted to try a new approach to taking a bear - a copper bullet that I've never hunted with.

    CFE BLK is a a solid, useful 300 Blackout powder for medium-to-heavy bullets, BUT it is so boss as a 7.62x39 powder that my nickname for it is CFE Soviet. Performs equal to Acc 1680 in that cartridge with less pressure and muzzle flash. Meters smooth as silk.

    Check the fire formed brass to the chamber bump measure, the rifling throat bullet jump distance and straightness (blue print), the crown condition, slug the barrel for the accuracy of correct bullet dimensions. Maybe bedding the stock well fix it??

    Shooting past 200 yards on a game animal using the deer gun 30-06 is ignorant and stupid and going to lose animals. The 30-06 just doesn't muster up the energy for longer shots and on large game from Elk and totally stupid to use in Alaska where your life could depend on an instant kill shot which the 30-06 cannot do on Brown or Grizzly bears and it can't even break down a bear to stop a charge.

    • @guyminer3168
      @guyminer3168 4 години тому

      Well, let's agree to disagree on that. The 30-06 is a fine cartridge for anything in North America and is well proven. I've taken grizzly, elk, black bear, mule deer and pronghorn antelope with it, no problem. Farthest range was 405 yards on elk, but several mule deer out at 300+, no problem. Oh, have I "lost" a big game animal in nearly 60 years of hunting? No. I'm not blazing any new trail here, the good ol' 30-06 has been doing this for more than 100 years.

    First, great video as always. I shoot a 6" Colt Anaconda for my .44 mag fix, range only, and always for the borderline masochistic, shock & awe experience that Keith's baby delivers so viscerally. If I want a reduced power load I'll load & shoot .44 Special. That said, my pet load is the Berry's #97080 240 grain plated flat point over the same 23.5 grains of Hodgdon H110/Winchester W296 as you with Federal Gold Match 155 magnum primers, crimped fairly heavily. Amazing accuracy and chrono consistency just over 1400 FPS with muzzle flash and recoil in spades. I love shooting at my indoor public range and hearing the bay go silent after a round or two while everyone else pauses to come see what the heck I'm shooting. I haven't tried Titegroup in .44 mag and have not been overly impressed with it in general as it tends to be messy in a Lee Auto Drum and has not produced stellar accuracy or consistency for me in other caliber loads.

    Barnes 150ttsx in my 30-06 going 3040fps under Big Game powder. My calculator says my 2000fps retained velocity is at 550yds! I'm like guy and would stick to 400 and in though. The expansion at 2000fps is pretty lame if you ask me, so I stop myself at 2200 retained which puts me at 400-425yds. Never even took a shot that far yet where I hunt so it's good enough

    Especially the small expensive rounds. 32 ACP, 380 ACP. Also shoot a lot of 32, 32 long, 32 H&R, and Federal Mag. It would suck not being able to tailor your loads for your needs, and barrel length. Usually load right around 30K psi for my LCR 327 mag in H&R mag brass with a quicker powder, CFE Pistol, 38, or Titegroup to reduce blast, and boost efficiency. Seems to be the sweet spot. Saving a ton on 6 ARC as well.

But now I damn near need a hammer to lift the bolt after firing. Any recommendations? Before swapping it was smooth as silk. It’s still the same bolt body and lugs.

      I haven't swapped out the J-hook bolt shroud on my 20ish year old 25-06 700 CDL though I've been tempted to do so. Seems like something just isn't right if it's that tough to open the bolt on your rifle. I don't have a proven recommendation for you and can only suggest that you ask the manufacturer of the replacement unit.

    The problem is that plastic magazine box has that plastic piece sadwitched between the stock and action at the front of the action screw. Cut it back short enough to allow for proper placement, than glass bed the stock under the action screw. That plactic allows for too much movement. Expantion/Contraction.

    Upon the urging of my dad, I used a Barnes X bullet for two deer kills with a 264 Win Mag. The bullet blew through both with a nickel sized exit hole. The deer ran 220 and 340 yards respectively. In Texas brush country, that is unacceptable. Switched back to lead core bullets and have not had a deer take two steps collectively since. It ain’t broke and I don’t plan on fixing it.

    I have used the E-tip in the 300 blackout, I have no issues with the one that was designed for the blackout, good accuracy and expansion out of my Ruger Ranch. I am looking at different options to use in my 7x57 in my Ruger 77. Any recommendations for the 7x57?

    • @guyminer3168
      @guyminer3168 День тому

      Glad the E-Tip worked well for you! Yes, with the 7x57 or 7-08 I'd recommend trying the 139 grain CX. That lighter bullet keeps the muzzle velocity high, which is good for these fairly hard bullets. They need speed to expand well. I'm working with that bullet and my 7mm Rem Mag currently. The 150 CX did well from the 7mm Rem Mag, I think the 139 might do even better. Best of luck!

    Ive dabbled with various monometal bullets for a few years, they do kill which is expected of any bullet, but they arent really as humane, generally require higher impact velocities to work, and have a shorter max range being less dense. They certainly are a viable option for the folks who insist on using overkill cartridges but don't want too much damage. I'll keep using my heavy for calibre match bullets. They make a cartridge punch above it's weight.

      130 grain CX factory load. 22” barrel 308. I did not chronograph the load. The second shoot did the trick.

      @@remi3479 - hmm - interesting. I don't think Hornady offers a 130 grain .308" CX bullet. Well, I'm glad you got the job done with the second shot. Sometimes game animal require follow up shots. I've certainly done so.

      You are correct, 308 win 150 grain SST🤦🏻‍♂️. The CX 130 was in 6.5 creedmore. I switched to after the Black tail incident.
